The Firm
Some words with partner Mike Harrop Activity Besides consulting for organizations, we've done a variety of startups over the years. About 20 % did very well, 30 % did break-even, 30% had to be re-structured and re-launched, and 10% failed - a typical average in this risky business. History The firm originated in northern UK during the industrial revolution, but from the 1800s was mostly active in silk and cotton processing, with its HQ in Romania and its markets in the Russian and Turkish empires and the Balkans. Since WW2, the firm has been nomadic but mainly active in Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Turkey, USA, and China. Career I did some startups in my teens, studied at Cambridge and West of Scotland universities, trained as an engineer for Coats Ltd in Italy and Austria, then did 11 years with DuPont's new products team in Geneva, ending as head of Kevlar® marketing for armor and composites. Kevlar®'s revolutionary properties meant re-inventing products and markets, which got me deeply involved with innovation. Since leaving DuPont in 1980, startups have been a big part of my life - Geneva Venture Zone, Forlink Software, Cats & Dogs retail chain, Pricer digital price labels for supermarkets, Kolorfusion, and others. Some are described in the "story" page. Today In 2008-2011 many startups were hit by the banking crisis - they are the most fragile part of the innovation chain. We had big losses and litigation. But today, the de-leveraging of the old societal models based on debt, non-renewable energy and opacity is leading to interesting new mindsets and needs, for which we are building new ideas under the brand-name "cheapersimpler".

My company, my affiliates or business relations ("Affiliates") may at all times have interests in companies, some being pure financial investments, some being strategic investments where Affiliates are visibly involved, some being small preparatory investments where the position assists in tracking a company's behavioural patterns. Affiliates are at all times informally researching private and listed companies, both for themselves and in liaison with third parties. | MIKE'S LEGAL DISCLAIMERS TRANSPARENCY, FREE SPEECH, INTERNET SEARCH AND CACHES I have been a systematic and heavy user of internet and videotext for 30+ years and have always posted in a free-speech manner and in my own name. I am relaxed and unparanoid about privacy and my life is run open source. As part of staying in touch with the latest software, social, organizational, design and marketing trends, I support new, experimental, weird, off-the-wall, artsy, minority, political, loony, or disruptive sites, blogs and fora. All these references may be picked up by search engines. Nothing ever dies on the internet, and search engines make no distinction between fun and professional remarks. In general on page 1 they show the remarks I would prefer to forget, whilst the stuff I'm happy with doesn't appear till page 23. Internet searches may find aged information which, if taken out of context, appears strange. They may also cache versions of my internet sites which were temporary, experimental, parodic or that were modified aeons ago. |
AUTOMATED MISUSE OF INTERNET LINKS AND ASSOCIATIONS Increasingly, web platforms and search engines such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and others automatically generate potentially deceptive associations between pieces of information that were born separate. Please ask for any clarifications you may need.
CREATIVE MISUSE OF WEBSITE INFORMATION With much useful and useless information available via the web, investigators, attorneys and competitors can easily generate amply documented positive or negative impressions of a target person, thus justifying their fees or salaries or existence. Please ask us for any clarifications you may need before jumping to conclusions or allowing anyone to convince you that you have a basis for legal action in the case of a business disagreement with me or any affiliate. Once again, the easiest way to solve problems is to ask for any information you may need, before damage is done to both parties. This is especially true for anyone who has not litigated often, or who is unfamiliar with the internet and how it can be creatively misused.
